Yep, the Small Form Factor PCs can be a real mother to get totally
working in Linux. I have a great Shuttle XPC/64 that took a couple of
solid weeks before it was usable by Debian. Had to recompile a new kernel
to get the SATA working and then again to get the ethernet to talk. Still
working on the 5.1 dolby - so far only 2 channel stereo.
Not just Linux either. Have a nephew who uses one for a traveling lan
party machine with XP and gets random reboots every hour or so. His
problem is that recompiling XP is not an option, even if he knew what to
fix.
