Hi all,
I need to put together a dual boot WinXP / Suse 10.0 machine urgently
and I really hope some kind soul can help me out. In the hope to speed
things up I had the following config assembled by a shop:

Athlon 64 X2 3800+ skt 939
Gigabyte K8NF9 NF4 DDR400CH PCIE GBLAN FW SATA
2 x 512Mb DDR400
EN6600 SILENCER 256MB PCIE TD ASUS
MAXTOR 200 SATA

However machine isn't working properly, already had them change once
motherboard and disk since it wasn't booting. Now I'm having ethernet
problems: with both Linux (Suse 10.0) and XP Pro the connection is on
and off at intermittent intervals of about 3 secs.
Drivers and cables are OK, seems like a mobo problem again.

Three questions:

1. Are there issues / problems with this configuration ?

2. Where can I cut down the cost? I'm returning this box anyway, so I
can change as
much as I want. I don't need a lot of graphics power, but CPU power (I
do scientific
number crunching things).

3. what's going on with my ethernet?
Thanks a lot.

Maybe your system isn't to blame, the problem could be on your ethernet
switch, try a different switch.

If it is your system that's at fault then the first thing I would
suspect is the power supply. You replaced the motherboard and that didn't
fix it so it's not the likely source of your problems. If it were a
memory problem I would expect the system to be generally unstable,
although you should run memtest86+ to rule out a possible RAM problem. My
suspicion would be an inadequate power supply, you should have at least a
450W supply in that system and it should be a name brand not the crap
supplies they bundle in cheap cases.

Of the components that you listed the only one that looks like it will be
a problem is the Maxtor disk. Maxtor has just released a firmware upgrade
to fix an incompatibility with Nforce4 chipsets which is what you
motherboard has. Maxtor disks are the least reliable on the market, I
always use Seagate (who's just bought Maxtor so we can expect to either
see the Maxtor brand name go away in the near future or for their quality
problems to be fixed, but for now avoid them).

Because you had the same problem with both Windows and Linux it's
unlikely that it's a driver issue. Besides that the Nforce4 chipset is
very well supported by recent Linux kernels, I've been using an Nforce4
motherboard with an X2 4400+ since last summer and I've never had any
problems with it, so there is no reason to suspect software. You might
want to make sure that you have the latest BIOS on your card, although I
think that a BIOS problem is not a very likely cause of your problems.
