I am not a gamer, from my notebook I expect:
- open Linux drivers for the hardware - good price
- basic, but "open" 3D (it is good to have some fun from time to

- graphics with open 3D drivers (ATI Radeon up to 9200, AFAIK)
Avoid ATI, they have lousy Linux support. All Nvidia chips are well
supported, I don't have any personal experience with Intel graphics but I
haven't seen anyone complain about Intel is this group.
I agree that nVidia has better binary drivers than ATI, but which nVidia
chip would fulfill the requirement of opensource 3D drivers?
Unfortunately I am unable to give a better piece of advice as I lack
experience from OpenGL on Laptops. I think, but this may be wrong, that
the ATI Mobility graphics differs some from their AGP and PCI-express
cards and require different drivers. It seems as if some of the mobility
cards are supported by the r300 driver which I think has given
experimental opensource 3D support to some more ATI cards in X.org 7.0.
Some intel cards also have opensource support, but those intel cards are
really low-end, and again, I really don't know how well this applies to
laptops.
