The problem I've noticed with AMD-based models is that they tend to
favour ATI graphics, which are more troublesome than others in 3D
acceleration, esp. on a laptop as the mobility radeon is AFAICT not
supported by the std ati driver.
The fglrx driver provides 2D and 3D acceleration for the Radeon Xpress 200M
in my notebook (an HP Special Edition L2000) and wasn't any more of a fuss
to set up (on Gentoo, at least) than any other. TV-out remains untested
(mainly because I've not had any need for it), but everything else works.
That's good to know. I think I'm getting confused with the ATI radeon
Xpress chipsets, which AFAICT are totally unspupported :-(
Totally unsupported? Don't tell my notebook that...it might decide to stop
working. :-)
(The only components in my notebook that aren't working yet are the modem,
the WiFi card, and the SD card reader. I don't care about the modem as I
rarely need one and I have a controller-based PC Card modem that I can use
when I do need it. (I'm more likely to just use Bluetooth to connect to the
Internet through my cell phone...it's a little bit faster) I have several
card readers that hang off a USB port that work, so the built-in reader
isn't that big a deal either. It'd be nice if the built-in WiFi would work,
but I have a CardBus 802.11a/b/g card that works in the meantime.)
