Hi,
Bom dia.
:-)
I'm about to install Linux (Gentoo 2006.0) in my cousin's computer. With the new LiveCD the install process is easier, but I'm afraid I'll need to specify the processor type/family somewhere (compiler options, ...).
Many liveCDs will report the exact processor model as they boot, DSL does
for example. I can't recall whether Gentoo does.
I'm afraid it does not. DSL, Knoppix, Paipix, etc. use all the same bootup system (Knoppix-based), but Gentoo uses a completely different system.
If it's needed, I'll use my DSL CD-ROM.
His computer is a Celeron, with one-thousand-and-something Mhz (I don't
remember the exact value). But, AFAIK, there are celerons with much
lower and higher frequencies.
The exact frequency value isn't important, only the architecture.
i386 = Intel 386 or better.
i586 = Pentium
i686 = PII and up.
Any GHz-rated processor from Intel is certainly an i686. (IIRR, the PIIs
went up to 500MHz).
Which identification should I use when it asks me the processor type?
686. But, if you were ever in doubt, or stuck, i386 should work for any
common Intel processor.
Ok. That's the information I was looking for. Thanks.
