If you want accelerated 3D, you install the Linux driver from
Nvidia. You'll need enough of the Linux kernel sources or headers
to allow the Nvidia driver to build. I just usually install the
kernel source .... but you might have other options depending
on your distribution choice (some even automatically pull down
the Nvidia drivers for you).

The Nvidia documentation is pretty good. I use SUSE, it's
a pretty painless installation and configuration.

The machine I'm using right now has a 6600GT in it.
