Xorg 6.7/MSI nVidia 5500/Widescreen LCD problem

I just upgraded my graphics and monitor setup to an nVidia FX 5500 and
Viewsonic VX2025wm (LCD 1680x1050 16:10 widescreen) and I'm having no
luck getting past 1280x1024 (yeah, weird resolution).

It seems that the nvidia driver just plainly refuses to do past 1280
and is limiting the refresh rate to 60Hz. Any suggestions on what
could be the issues?

setup:
Mandrake 10.1 (yep.. nice and old but Ubuntu Dapper fails likewise)
kernel 2.6.8.1-26mdk
Xorg 6.7.0
MSI FX5500 w/ 256MB
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8756

I can see why the 1680x1050 at 60 doesn't work because of 146.25 pclk
and the monitor caps at 135. But I don't understand why it is locked
onto 60Hz and thus preventing a 50Hz version from being selected. And
just an FYI, I was unable to get Windows XP with a FX 5200 and this
monitor to get past 1280x1024 also (and it didn't even provide 16:10
resolutions -- terrible!)

Dan

PS. I'm including some of the debug output from X during its
initialization.
