Re: Motherboards: Supermicro vs Tyan

Up until now, we've been using boxes built around Supermicro
motherboards for our various Linux servers. For various reasons (none of
which involve being unhappy with the hardware), we're considering a shift
to using Tyan motherboards.

Is anyone familiar with both "families" that can comment on whether this
shift is a Good Thing or Bad (or of no consequence)?

It's mostly not a bad thing, but Tyans do tend to have a few more "quirks"
than the Supermicros, in my experience. The Supermicros are definitely more
mature, robust products. That doesn't mean that I don't use Tyans (I just
bought an 8-socket system from them), but if I have a choice, I'll go with
the Supermicro.

The downside to Supermicro motherboards is that with many of them, trying
to install them in a non-Supermicro chassis can require odds and ends like
6-pin power extenders. You just buy the board with the chassis, and call it
good - especially since their boards and chassis fit like hands and gloves.
