home it, it booted OK until I got to the "GNOM" displayer when my LCD
monitor went black displaying the message "out of range". I suppose, it's
to do with the monitor display setting, so I went back, but didn't know what
to change in the setting. I entered my correct monitor resolution, so what
else can be wrong?

There are two important settings for your monitor, the resolution and the
refresh rate. LCD monitors are usually not able to handle as high refresh
rates as CRT monitors can. CRT monitors need higher refresh rates,
otherwise they will flicker but this is not a problem with LCD monitors.

The refresh rate is controlled by the horisontal and vertical bandwidths.
The settings for those are the HorizSync and VertRefresh values in the
configuration file for X. The name of that file depends upon which X
server you have. Newer distributions use X.org where the file is named
xorg.conf. Older distrubutions used XFree86 where the file was named
XF86Config. The file is usually placed in /etc/X11 or /etc. You are
probably able to find the values for your monitor in the manual. Usually
the graphics card is also able to ask the monitor for the values. This can
be done automatically by X.org or manually using a tool like read-edid
http://john.fremlin.de/programs/linux/read-edid/
