I have an hp also. generally works well but acpi is, as you say, a bit

There are settings in the kernel to change the behavior or PM depending
on how it reacts on shutdown or sleep. I just noticed the kernel-HOWTO
has been removed for review :-( By checking the 2.6.17 source, in the
setup under power management depending on the effect when you try to
shut down.
