I found an article from 2005 saying that HP was ensuring that some
laptops would at least work if you installed Ubuntu on it.

HP's laptops... from my own experience.. is not great. Their ACPI
implementation always causes some headaches. With that said, I do
have SUSE 10.0 on a nc6230 (relatively contemporary.. still sold by HP).
But it does require the dmi hack for the thing to reboot/shutdown...
Can't speak too much on the IBM's... have not tried on anything
relatively recent.
My favorites have been the Dell Latitude/Precision series.
YMMV...
I have a Compaq R3000z and ACPI works fine. The R3000z is an AMD64 laptop
with an Nforce 3 chipset. The NForce chipsets are very well supported in
the Linux kernel so that's a good reason to get am AMD laptop. However the
current generation of HP/Compaq Turion laptop have ATI graphics chips,
mine has an Nvidia. ATI does support Linux but apparently it's not as easy
to get ATI to work as Nvidia. I'm not speaking from personal experience on
ATI, just echoing what I've read in this group. My laptop has a Broadcom
802.11g chip. I've been using Ndiswrapper with it and that works fine.
