Practically every Epson scanner ever made works Just Fine if you
download the evil binary-only SANE backends from Epson's site on
http://www.avasys.jp/english/linux_e/ . (I don't know if they have a
French section, sorry.) My Epson 3490 works well with those.

How did you get it working: I tried now for hours, and it is always the
same: iscan answers that it cannot access the scanner....

sane-find-scanner and scanimage -L can see it though!
