What program(s) have you tried to use to play sound?

Actually I think its working now I got a system sound.

Thanks

Doh the sound is gone again. I went back into alsamixer and one sb
live was muted so I unmuted it but still no sound again. Is this
flaky or what>

With alsa mixer, you have to load your settings on boot (in your
/etc/profile for example) and then save them when you want to keep a
change.

Ok, back to basics: Try playing a wav file (won't sound good but will
work)

cat <wavfilename>.wav&>/dev/dsp

does that work? if so then try a midi file:

cat <midifilename>.rmi &>/dev/midi

That should sound even worse. You should be able to find wav files
under the <drive>/windows directory possible under the multimedia
directory if you have MS windows on that machine. For RMI files, you can
use midnight commander to search a subdirectory (or use grep if you know
it) mc brings it up (or gmc if under X) and after you use the cursor
keys to switch to /usr (BTW you should be root for this stuff) under the
file menu there is a search for files - leave the containing text empty
and put *.rmi in the filename box it will give you a list after which
you can (P)anelize it and then use the mouse to select the command
prompt below to type the above line. If neither of these work you need
to look through the alsa sound howto and possible the sound howto again.
if you get sound in both cases then it's not saving the settings for
alsamixer. If you get no sound, but no errors than ditto. If you get an
error than the howtos is the way to go.
