flashing firmware on DVD drive

Hi,

Is there any generic linux utility for flashing firmware on a DVD drive?

Obviously every model will have to use a different image, but does the
flashing utility have to be specific as well? If they do have to be
different, are there any brands that can be flashed from linux? I did
find a reference to an NEC flashing utility. Do any manufacturers
provide such a tool?
