Hi,
Is there any generic linux utility for flashing firmware on a DVD drive?
Obviously every model will have to use a different image, but does the
flashing utility have to be specific as well? If they do have to be
different, are there any brands that can be flashed from linux? I did
find a reference to an NEC flashing utility. Do any manufacturers
provide such a tool?

My short answer is ....I'm not sure if there's a "Linux" tool.
Besides; Updating firmware usually does _not _ involve the OS,
therefore, I fail to find the relevance (usually they're binary files),
though I haven't thought much about this issue lately (much else on my
"todo" list). I actually have an NEC DVD-RW drive installed a few
months ago, that I haven't followed up with yet.

As you'll read, you'll notice the plethora of available options
(Riplock, RPC alteration (RegionFree), Bitsetting (Booktype), support
for +R instead of only -R, same for RAM, LabelFlash(NEC), Higher burn
rates using certain media, etc, etc).
Just choose wisely and research deeply before actually carrying out the
procedure -- and there certainly are many different Flash utilities,
and each have a specific task or many tasks. Certain Manu(s) (and/or
Coders) only write for their Brand/OEM/Target Audience. Many of these
are very specific in what they can accomplish. I know almost all the
major brands can be flashed (in one way or another).
