Two ethernet ports in a single hardware

Hello All,
I needed some information on what are the prerequisites for having two
ethernet ports on a single hardware.
Assume I have a hardware with a switch on board. This is a two
port switch. So i am assuming that the switch will have in-built
functionality of switching the packets between the two ports. Apart
from this, we would also need some IP routing/Forwarding to be done at
the IP Layer to route packet between the two ports.
Am i right on this? Am I missing somthing here? Do we need anything
else in the hardware or the Network stack that we need to add to
support the two ethernet ports.
Thanks in advance,
Sandeep
.
