Setting up a HP printer using lpr, printcap and foomatic

Hi,

Could you please point me to some docs that show how one may setup
a printer using tools like lpr and foomatic (no CUPS please).
My printer is HP Deskjet 710C . I have CONFIG_PARPORT=y in my
kernel config along with a few other options. I prefer linux
command line solutions but have zero knowledge of linux/unix
printing setup. I did look at linuxprinting.org but much
of the docs there seem to assume one already has a basic
understanding of linux printing. The LDP HowTo was not
much help either, for instance it does not go into
issues as to how to make sure if the drivers for a parallel
port printer are setup correctly before trying to
configure the spooler.
