I couldn't find a general purpose comp hardware group, but I need
a quick answer, so I'll ask here.
Is ATA133 backwards compatible with ATA100? In other words, can I
plug an ATA133 cable into an ATA100 slot on the motherboard?
erm, yes. But your terminology is a bit confusing: there's not really any
such thing as an ATA133 'cable'. There are 80-pin and 40-pin IDE cables.
40-pin cable is the older type IDE cable which was deemed suitable for upto
33Mb/s (ATA33). The newer cable is suitable for faster speeds (upto
ATA133). However, ultimately the speed is determined is by the drive,
controller and cable, with the speed defaulting to the lowest common
denominator
I imagine if yes, the whole thing would still work as ATA100, right?
Assuming the controller and drive are capable, then yes.
