Unfortunately OpenGL seems to be broken for R200 cards (everything below
Radeon 9500) in this driver version. The Troubleshooting section describes
how to fix this after xorg-driver-fglrx is installed. [edit]
Installing the driver
You still haven't told us anything about which card you have. However, if
you have an R200 based card the opensource radeon driver works fine and
you won't need to install fglrx.

The above guide solved the ati driver problems. My card is:
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9800 Pro Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.5814 (8.25.18)
The opensource driver did not render DRI at all so I switched to the
propiatary ati driver which works very well once the above guide is
followed.
