Re: Recommendations for 939 motherboard

If you don't have a CPU then you'll want to build a socket AM2 system not
a socket 939. AMD has moved to socket AM2 so there aren't going to be any
new socket 939 parts and the existing parts are going to be increasingly
hard to find although I'm sure that you'll be able to get them for some
time to come. For a socket AM2 motherboard I'd suggest an MSI K9N Platinum
but once again any Nforce motherboard will do. The MSI boards that I
recommended have dual gigabit ethernet controllers and onboard RAID.

If you want to go for an AM2, I highly recommend *not* to get the MSI K9N boards. The reason is that they simply do not work stable. The board layout is faulty and these boards shut down randomly if equipped with an AMD64 X2 core. For that, please check out the MSI forum. MSI currently receives a lot of critique due to these boards, and users have to mail them back in to get them repaired. How do I know? I had one...

I also do not suggest to get the ABit boards since they show exactly the
same problem. Maybe the NForce5 isn't quite ready for the market.

What I've been heard is that the ASUS AM2 boards are known to run stable, but I haven't tried that by myself (yet).

*If* the K9N would work stable, they would be rather ideal since Linux seems to run just fine... As long as it runs, that is. )-: It is not a driver or a bios problem, win32 has just the same issues.

The fastest available processors are the new Intel Core2 Duos. They are
just entering the market so it's not clear which motherboards have the
fewest Linux issues. I'm planning on getting a Core2 system sometime in
the next month or so, probably a system with either an Intel 975X chipset
or the Nforce4 for Intel chipset. Last week someone else mentioned that
they got a 965 based motherboard and that there is a driver problem with
the PATA controller (965s are SATA only so they require an external chip
to provide PATA which is still necessary for most DVD and CD drives).

Intel Core2 Duos are faster, but also more expensive. If you can spend the money to get one, do so as soon as they become stable. It's intel, *if* they run, they should do a good job.

So long,
Thomas
