I thought things were pretty simple, but after some research I'm less
sure. I have been told that an A64 or Conroe would be better for this

serving. This doesn't seem sensible to me since the f and the woodcrest
are faster.

I need to crunch 2 - 3 gig files, using single-threaded, 64 bit matlab,
using suse 64 bit, lots of RAM. Our analysis tends to load all of the
data into RAM. We have people sitting around waiting for an analysis
to finish. We really need to maximize the speed on our next purchases.

I am confused about the different cpu options: opteron f, intel
woodcrest, intel conroe, workstations vs servers, and so on.

What can I get in the next 3 months that will be the fastest way to
crunch our analyses? Why?

Thanks very much....

You don't indicate what type of data or the processing. My suggestion
would be to parallelize the application and go for a multi-processor dual
core board. The difference between (for example) a 2.8 Intel and a 3300
AMD is insignificant when compared to the difference of a multi-threaded
app running on 4 or 8 cpus.
