OK, that's sensible; but what about scheduled (automatic) backup?
I'd like a hot backup (I say: a nightly backup while the machine is
fully operative), not a cold one (I say: an assisted backup). If the
external unit has an independent PSU, how should I coordinate its
power-on time for unattended execution when the scheduled backup
triggers?

Get a usb powered one. Although AFAIK that limits you to notebook
2.5" drives, which don't have to same capacity as 3.5" drives - 160Gb
max plus higher cost.

But you missed to clarify HOW to deal with the coordination between
the backup scheduler and the external backup unit: my problem is that
I want the external unit to automatically switch on when the backup
process starts, and to switch off immediately after the end of the
backup process.

That's the point of using usb *powered* HD enclosure it has no external
power supply and thus no need to switch it off and on.

HOW can I save electric power when the external backup
unit is not in use?

I'm not sure of the specifics, but I'm guessing unmounting the drive in
combination with setting a spindown option in s/hdparm will stop it
spinning 24/7. Google will give more info...

Thank you again.
