well.... thank you....

the problem seems (and maybe is ) simple.
on a disk (fat32 partition) i had a directory with many directireis in it
(60g of music).
one day my 'root' directory with 60g of music is no more seen as a
direcrory which I could open but seen as an unknown file.
That's it. Seen of course in windows. I checked with Partition magic all
60g are there but unaccessible.
I vaguely heard that there is sth to be done with Disk edit but what I
don't know...

Thanks again if you can direct me

sorry for offtopic

But maybe somebody knows where (forum?) I could discuss data recovery
issues

Thank you veru much

I don't think it's off topic. I've rescued myself a couple of times -
once from a hard disk failure by copying the vital partitions, and once
from a partitioning error. If you'd like to be a little more explicit, I
expect folks here could help.

If it's a dying disk - don't mount any partition on it. Boot a Live CD
after installing a new disk, and copy out the data you need to save using
dd.

While i have seen arm twisted versions of FAT32 above 32 GB it is known that
they are unreliable.

If you really want that music back consider the following:
get a new HD,
using Knoppix or similar use dd to copy the damaged partition to an ext2
partition on the new drive,
reformat that partition using partition magic,
using Knoppix dd copy the data back to your arm twisted fat32 partition.

Or junk windows and try Ubuntu Linux (on a new HD of course).
