any surprises awaiting the unwary, or will this all "just" work? (I
can use an external USB CD for installation. I heard rumors that there
are problems with the cd-rom.) which kernel drivers should I use? do
newer kernel versions (2.6.18-pre?) have something that works better
with this system here? thanks for any advice.

I have linux running on approx 6 XPC's which are mostly SK's and SG's, the
newest only approx 2 months old (kubuntu 6.06.1) and in ALL cases while I
could boot from a USB external DVD/CD drive, when it came time to install,
the process wouldn't identify the install sources from the device. I had
to temporarily pull the cover and connect an IDE DVD/CD drive to perform
the actual install.
Just my $.02 worth - YMMV
