Hi, we write our own algorithms in matlab to crunch really big files (a
few gigs). This is single threaded stuff and it uses up as much ram as
we can throw at it.We generally don't use swap space much, as we use
many gigs of ram, so neither disk access or network access are issues.
We don't use the workstations for anything else, and they are generally
crunching 24/7.

Anybody know which of the current workstation CPUs out there we should
look for in buying a few new workstations? I've heard the core 2 duos,
the woodcrests, and the opteron socket f's are all new chips. Which
will serve us best?

Many thanks to you...

Best advice: figure out how to parallelize your code or work with smaller
data sets and break the problem up. No matter if you have the fastest chip
in the world, it's only going to be a few percent faster than something a
LOT cheaper. Multiple processors and dual cores will obviously gain you
nothing (except the possibility of running two different jobs on the same
computer).
