I'd like to use Linux since Windows 98 seems to be working very
slowly on my elderly PC. I blame a lot of that on the need to run
separate firewall and antivirus software.
Have you any suggestions which Linux to use?
Add ram, it's cheap. Ubuntu 6.06 will not even install in less than
192M.
RAM is not necessarily cheap for older machines.
You could try a 'lighter' version of Ubuntu called Xubuntu, which won't
be such a resource hog.
If you are legal on the W98 you may want to install from scratch.
Although, now that win98 is no longer supported by MS it's going to be
(more of) a security hazard, plus the majority of firewall and virus
vendors are no longer supporting it either. My father-in-law had to
update to XP to get the latest version of Norton working :-/
Adding ram and the second drive here too is a good idea.
RAM will always be a good idea, but for an old machine the cost may not
be worth it.
