RAM is not necessarily cheap for older machines.
True if you buy it from dealers but with that machine you can rumage
through the throw aways and probably bump it up to 256 at least for
little or no money. Same for a second hard drive. In the case of
glass based crt's they will be making people pay for disposing them
pretty soon because of epa regulations. Giving it away to some
unsuspecting person is cheaper than paying a professional recycler.

I can buy pretty much any stick of older ram for < US$5 at the local computer recycle place. All guaranteed working, too. So look around.
It already costs $15 to recycle a glass monitor here. (That's each!)
Also, if you're in the US, look up freecycle.org - a great organization for getting (and giving) free stuff.
