thanks, john-paul, but I think its deeper than this. I only see my two
internal SATA drives:
# lsscsi
[0:0:0:0] disk ATA SAMSUNG HD400LJ ZZ10 /dev/sda
[1:0:0:0] disk ATA WDC WD3200KS-00P 21.0 /dev/sdb
# more scsi
Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: ATA Model: SAMSUNG HD400LJ Rev: ZZ10
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 05
Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: ATA Model: WDC WD3200KS-00P Rev: 21.0
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 05
nothing about the external drive is visible. it's almost as if the
00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801GB/GR/GH (ICH7 Family)
Serial ATA Storage Controller IDE (rev 01)
is not driving the eSATA port at all. the old rescan-scsi-bus script
does not change anything, and neither does piping into /proc/scsi/scsi.
I wonder how shuttle has wired this esata port. I will try
cold-plugging it later.

I have been running the shuttle sd37p2 for 2 weeks under gentoo linux
now. I am pleased. It is quiet and stable. Fitting a fat video card
into it is however not easy. My advice would be to stick to more basic
video cards that don't have huge coolers. I have found good linux
drivers for everything---except for one item: the eSata port on it. I
presumed it is supposed plug and play, and that the internal SATA
driver would just pick up when a new drive appears on it (just like
USB). alas, this does not seem to be the case.
Does that mean you're hot plugging the drive when you say "just like
USB"? If so, you might want to try booting with the eSATA drive attached.
Also, for SCSI drives, you can do:
echo "scsi-add-single-device a b c d" >/proc/scsi/scsi
to hot plug them. Since SATA drives operate through the SCSI layer,
this might work for hot plugging your eSATA drive. In the above
command, "a b c d" need to be replaced with the proper SCSI
identification numbers for you device. Post the output of 'cat
/proc/scsi/scsi' if you need help figuring them out. Or perhaps just
try the "rescan-scsi-bus.sh" script. (Google for it, if your distro
doesn't include it.)
