I'm about to put together a Core2 Duo system to be used as a computeI had to RMA Supermicro PDSBA recently (g965 board). Looks like
server. I'm leaning towards an Abit AB9 Pro but I'm open to suggestions. I
don't care about graphics performance at all, the system will
running without X, but I do care about CPU, memory and disk performance.
I'm planning on an E6700 with 4G of DDR2 800 and a pair of Seagate 320G
SATA drives in a RAID 0 configuration. I'll be running 64 bit FC5 or FC6
on hte box. I have an SATA DVD ROM so I think I have a way around the
problems with the JMicron PATA controller.
If you have a Core2 system, which motherboard are you using, have there
been any Linux compatibility problems?, any memory compatibility problems?
(965s are supposed to be finicky), are you happy with it?
I busted something trying to install thermaltake sonic tower:
the intel mounting kit for that heatsink is HORRIBLE. What a P.O.S.
So pay attention to what you get cpu cooler wise unless you
plan to use intel cooler: I have a plug for Asus silent square:
The mounting kit for intel and the heatsink itself are just awestome.
Beatifully crafted. An IT guy at work pointed out though
that the cables could burn on tall heatsinks. He is a fan of wint
tunnels
with two fans on each end :-) I'll see soon enough if plastic gets
burned
when I get my parts back.
For the server would you want to give Intel 975X boards a try?
Those support ECC ram: a big plus imho considering the amount of
ram in the servers these days. That's what I should've got,
but I was tempted by the fully supported onboard graphics for g965: not
an issue for you.
Just curious, if you want a server why won't you go the Xeon/fbdimm
route?
Btw, how do fbdimm modules look like?
