Re: Motherboards for Core2 Duo

For the server would you want to give Intel 975X boards a try?
Those support ECC ram: a big plus imho considering the amount of
ram in the servers these days. That's what I should've got,
but I was tempted by the fully supported onboard graphics for g965: not
an issue for you.

Just curious, if you want a server why won't you go the Xeon/fbdimm
route?
Btw, how do fbdimm modules look like?

This is a compute server, I'll be running Verilog simulations on it. For
that purpose two cores in one system are enough. Intel made a terrible
mistake by using FBDIMMs in their servers, the latency of FB DIMMs is
terrible. The only advantage of FB DIMMs is that you can put more RAM in
one system, however a Core2 Duo box can hold 8G which is more than enough
for my purposes. In fact I really only need 4G at the moment so that's
what I'm planning on getting. A year from now, when 2G DIMMs are cheaper,
I'll upgrade the memory to 6G or 8G.

Ok. I got Kingston KVR667D2E5K2/1G (1.8 volt I think). 240 pin ecc
pc2-5300.
I haven't seen any pc-6x00 ecc so I assume you plan to do without error
checking.
Not sure if at CL5 latency of these are any better for you than fbdimms
would be.
I'm also not sure why would you care about latency in a server.
I think those things are optimized for throughput.
Btw on PDSBA the passively cooled northbridge got all the way to 55
celsius
after a few hours of memtest86ing. The room was at about 69-73F.
And I was not overclocking anything.
