Canon PowerShot cameras do not play well with Linux GUI apps for
downloading photos. I have a PowerShot A540, same problem. However, if you
install "gphoto2" you will have no problems detecting and downloading
photos - but it is a command line application.

Have you tried gtkam or kamera? Those are both GUI frontends to gphoto2.

I've been using gtkam. gphoto2 does show the camera and can list the files - so I'm assuming it will also download them.

However, although digikam shows the camera it won't talk to it. And gtkam doesn't even detect the camera - even if I tell it what camera it is. gphoto2 auto-detects it.
