Trying To Connect HP Scanjet 8390

I'm a web developer, working on an imaging project, and I'm trying to
connect an HP Scanjet 8390 with the sane drivers. Sane can see my
device at either:
libusb:004:003
or:
usb 0x03f0 0x3805
....but unfortunately 'scanimage -L' can't see it with the 0.17 drivers
on Ubuntu Linux (Dapper release). I also couldn't get the 0.18 drivers
to install properly. So I edited /etc/sane.d/hp.conf and put this in:
# HP ScanJet 8390
usb 0x03f0 0x3805
....and then 'scanimage -L' sure did give it a try, but then spit back:
No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something
different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the
documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
I also was very disappointed to find that HP is no longer using the SCL
language for its scanners.
Has anyone gotten this to work? I need a scanner capable of doing batch
scans with automatic document feed, and I decided to go with a major
name brand.
I hope I don't have to send this beast of a scanner back, or go with
Windows.
