RAM is not necessarily cheap for older machines.
True if you buy it from dealers but with that machine you can rumage
through the throw aways and probably bump it up to 256 at least for
little or no money.

Same for a second hard drive. In the case of
glass based crt's they will be making people pay for disposing them
pretty soon because of epa regulations. Giving it away to some
unsuspecting person is cheaper than paying a professional recycler.

You could try a 'lighter' version of Ubuntu called Xubuntu, which won't
be such a resource hog.
It also doesn't look as nice. It's better to "improve" the computer.

Although, now that win98 is no longer supported by MS it's going to be
(more of) a security hazard, plus the majority of firewall and virus
vendors are no longer supporting it either. My father-in-law had to
update to XP to get the latest version of Norton working :-/

RAM will always be a good idea, but for an old machine the cost may not
be worth it.
