The HP's have special drivers. hpoj and/or hpijs.
And a few other trinkets like pnm2ppa and gs-esp.
The lasers normally use the HPOJ drivers.

Also make sure you have cupsys and cupsys-bsd
installed. Once you get the print test page working
the rest is fairly easy. Since it's USB, make sure
you have your usb stuff setup to include module lp.ko
for usb printing.
