ps2 mouse not working

I've just installed Debian on an old Compaq proliant 1600.
It has a ps2 mouse attached, and my initial problem is that it doesn't
work in X Windows.

I am expecting that

cat /dev/psaux

should produce output when I move the mouse, but it doesn't.

Could anyone suggest what I might do to make it work?
