I have no idea about USB. Since you say the camcorder has Firewire I'd suggest using that instead. If you don't have Firewire ports, add-in cards are ~$20 and should "just work" with the ohci1394 module (for the card) and video1394 (for the camera).
You will also need to load (or build your kernel with support for) raw1394
.
