The errors are not always
correctable, but a signal should also be sent to the OS. Then
again, the problems might not have been due to memory, as you
mention below.I don't think the problem was memory, for several reasons:
- The problem did not show up with things where memory errors
typically show up, like compiling.
but with 1-2 gb norm nowadays I don't think this is a useful test
anymore.
Btw saw 50C on my nothbridge when running Civilization IV last night:
supermicro mobo popped a prompt "50C system temp reached. Is
your system functioning normally? Yes/No"
This is utterly stupid: if they saw the problem themselves why did
not they provide the proper cooling for the northbridge?????
memtest86 does not give you any prompts. You'd just find
the system down in the morning.
Connected a fan to the case door. Exhaust fan is in the works for me.
I have had occasion to check other peoples computers, (and my own)with bad memory (and that went bad after years of working fine). The
with Memtest86 or other memory checking software, and over the
years I have come to the conclusion that bad memory systems (not
necessarly defective RAM) are the most common faults.I have had much better luck with hardware. I know only one system
funny thing there was that it was ECC memory, but ECC was turned off
in the BIOS:-(.
To prevent people from detecting defective ECC memory ? :-)
