Good. This makes things easy.
I'm lazy. If there is some simple way to hook the new drive up so I
only have to do one transfer instead of two, I'd prefer that.
partimage can run unattended for the vast majority of the time it
takes, which means you can spend that time doing fun stuff like
sleeping or riding motorcycles or drinking beer or all 3 at once.
Living in Idaho it's a bit cool for riding the motorcycle.
Snowshoeing is more in order now except that we don't have much snow.

Motorbike+snow = bad idea, usually. We finally have about 6" of snow on
the ground here in southern MI. Yay for winter!

there are usually only 2 IDE channels on a laptop, and each channel
generally doesn't support more than 1 disk.
BTW what about the CD connector? If I disconnect that can I possibly
[connect a 2.5" disk] to it, or does that use a different connector?

It depends on various things. The 44-pin 2.5" standard connector may be
there, or the connector may be in a different form factor. Ultrabay
devices on Thinkpads use something with a higher pin density and a
different shape. YLaptopMV.
