I am looking for recomendations on linux compatible
mp3 and/or multimedia players other than iPod (too pricy!).
Prefer ones with large disk capacity.
What sort of compatibility do you need? Most mp3 players are seen as
mass-storage devices by linux, so loading music is simply a matter of
copying files just as you would to any other storage device.
True of many of the generic no-name brands, BUT not true of
the popular brands.
I'd look at the ones from Cowon.
The Sansa players work well (if you have to have a brand name
quality)... but they just do .wma and .mp3.
Creative players tend to use MTP... and if you go do the work,
they somewhat work, but I would NOT recommend them.
I've heard that many iRiver devices will work, but I've also
heard that some of their don't work.
If I had to choose today, I'd go with a Cowon:

(I own a Sansa e260 and a Zen Vision:M)
