Printer manufacturers, these days, seem to come out with a new model every
other week. The differences between which I care for not at all. I just
need a printer that will print plain B&W, reasonably fast, and cheap.

Most common use will be occasional letters, notes, etc., most use use
will be printing out PDF user manuals, etc. (That is, the few
multi-hundred-page user manuals I print will swamp, in terms of total page
count, the more common one or two page letter.)

I'd prefer laser to ink jet, though if the ink jet is noticablly cheaper
and reasonably fast, I might go for it.

Problem, though, is knowing which one will work with Linux.

Any ideas?

I'd suggest a Samsung or Brother sub $100 laser. If it does PCL, you're
in. Generally if it mentions MAC on the box in addition to MS then it will
probably work. I've had a Brother HL1440 for a couple of years, and no
complaints.
