The main purpose will be my studies (mainly Writer, Calc too...) but I
want to play with Linux too (apache and mail server). But I need at
least average quality for video and sound cause I want to look and
listen to Hindi movies

Video: Get an nVidia card, use the evil binary-only nVidia modules if
you need accelerated 3D, no problem.

First, you don't need accelerated 3D for video, so probably any
graphics card is fine.

But if you want 3D (e.g., for games), you can buy cards that support
hardware 3D without chaining yourself to proprietary software, in
particular the Intel on-board graphics (not very powerful, however),
and ATI Radeon cards up to the X850XT (some of these are pretty
powerful). I recommend these options and would not touch Nvidia or
ATI X1xxx cards because of their lack of support for free software.
