Anoter new information:
Smaller disk (samsung 40G, master) doesn't use DMA as well:
hdparm /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
multcount = 16 (on)
IO_support = 0 (default 16-bit)
unmaskirq = 0 (off)
using_dma = 0 (off)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)
geometry = 65535/16/63, sectors = 78242976, start = 0

wibble... OK, so it is a PATA drive, not a SATA (hdb would be sd?
otherwise). I assume this is Linux 2.6 (I don't know Slackware, only
redhat/debian derivatives).

It pongs of a lack of proper IDE driver support in the kernel for this
mobo - wondering is your system has failed to load one of the kernel
modules, perhaps something with "via" in the name?

Other than that, I don't know what to suggest - sorry.

Good luck,
