Hi everybody,
thanks for your answers! These were very helpful. But I also talked to
some friends of mine in real life and got some warnings. I would like
you to tell me if this is really a risk or not.
It's all about the fact that the printer does not neither "speak"
PostScript nor PCL. As you said I will be able to print with it using
SPL through CUPS. I told this to my friends but they did not stop
warning me.
Will there be any disadvantages with a printer only speaking SPL? Will
printing of particular documents or printing in general be impossible,
inaccurate or slower? They especially noted that printing might be
inaccurate -- for example: You want to fill out the fields in a given
form and send it to the printer, but it won't print the labels on the
expected location. Is this is real risk under Linux? I hope this is
just an issue with those Windows drivers...
Thanks
Daniel
I don't know about that particular model. About three years ago I set up a
community theatre with a used IBM laptop with Knoppix installed. I set up
an inexpensive Samsung printer to print the postscript seating and
reservation charts I programmed - worked fine. As for the Brother models -
my HL1440 does indeed speak PCL. I don't know, but I would expect that SPL
is nothing but a bastardized version of PCL - I would not expect any
difficulties.
