I think that depends on the case.
With a cheap, poorly thought out case I'd bet leaving off the sides would help cool it.
With a well engineered case, where attention was paid to ducting high-speed airflow across critical components, that's when I'd expect leaving the sides off would do more harm than good.
My case is definitely of the 'cheap, poorly designed' sort - in essence a metal box with a few holes in it, which definitely is a part of the problem.
