Having had no experience in the area, I'm thinking of getting an
inexpensive mp3 player--does [one of those] appear as and work like
an iPod, or is there a significant difference?
iPods are *strange* among portable mp3 players. iPods appear as USB
(Firewire) Mass Storage devices, but they store their playlists and
lists of music files in an opaque format. Fortunately, gtkpod works
really well with iPods IME.
There are a number of mp3 players that appear as bog-standard
USB/Firewire Mass Storage devices where you just copy mp3 files to the
device and the device recognizes them/+adds them to a playlist.
Specifics depend on the make+model of the device you buy. If you're
looking for advice, post the makes+models of the devices you're
considering, and someone may be able to advise you as to which one would
work best.
Thanks, that's the sort of info I was looking for.
