frequency out of range Ilyama E431S and Matrox G550 using DVI

Hey everyone,

I have installed several distro's of Linux and with all I have the same problem. I can't seem to get it fixed. The problem is that when X starts
my TFT says the frequencies are out of range. However, when I turn my
monitor off and on, or I switch to textmode and back it works fine. So
it seems that X does something while starting which my monitor doesn't
like.

here is the somewhat more extended description I posted on LinuxQuestions.org. Any help is much appreciated!

I have the following configuration:
- Ilyama Prolite E431S TFT
- connected with DVI (can't recall having this problem when I still had an analog connection)
- Matrox Millenium G550
- X currently uses default 'vesa' driver (however, I have the same problem with the mga driver)
- resolution is 1280x1024 (24 bit)
- I'm currently using Ubuntu 7.04, however, I have had this problem with every other linux distro I tried (fedora, mandiva, suse, other versions of Ubuntu)

I have the following problem:
- When x starts I always get an 'out of range' message with horizontal 64kHz and vertical 60Hz. However these are well within the range of my monitor.
- I can fix the issue by switching to a TTY and back, or turn my monitor off and on. However, I would like it to work at startup.

I've tried a lot of things.
- changed the driver to the mga driver
- I fiddled with the frequencies and refresh rates
- I've reduced the number of possible screen resolutions.
- I've searched the web

Nothing seems to work. It seems that X does something before initializing the screen which offsets my monitor. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Vincent
