I have an ASUS M2R32-MVP motherboard with SATA harddrives. I can't get
ANY linux to install on it. Has anyone gotten ANYTHING to run on this
board, with or without crippling boot options?
I have tried different versions of openSUSE, Fedora, and Debian. Even
latest alpha versions. They either don't detect any harddisk, or hang. I
even tried Arch Linux with 2.6.20 kernel. It crashes with a kernel
panic. I have done alot of googling and I see a fair amount of people
having the exact same problems with this board that I am. I have seen
zero solid answers.
Sad thing is i've been trying to completely switch to Linux for years.
This was going to be the big move so I bought (what I thought was) nice
hardware to run. But these problems have been going on for over 7 months
now so Im guessing that the community just doesnt have much interest in
this board/chipset? Should I save my pennies for a different board and
trash this sucker?
Don't know if this helps, but ... Last week I tried to install Ubuntu
on a system with an ASUS motherboard . (Sorry, do not recall the model
and I do not have access to it anymore)
The install CD would start correctly up to the point of loading and
uncompressing the kernel, then would hang for ever when attempting to
access the CD drive or hard disk. Tried other distros (Knoppix, SLAX,
DSL) with similar results.
After wasting a couple hours I just switched to a different machine.
What I noticed (and I suspect this is at the root of the problem,) is
that the BIOS listed the ATA hard drive and CD-ROM drive as masters in
the *third* and *fourth* IDE controllers.
There were no first and second controllers, and there were no built in
SATA, SCSI or raid controllers that could have filled that spot.
Also, there were no options on the BIOS screen that would have allowed
me to reassign this controllers as first and second.
I did not think of it at the time, but maybe a "root=/dev/hdd1" kernel
parameter could have fixed that problem
(Windows XP was running fine on that system)
