Re: nothing works on ASUS M2R32-MVP

I have an ASUS M2R32-MVP motherboard with SATA harddrives. I can't get
ANY linux to install on it. Has anyone gotten ANYTHING to run on this
board, with or without crippling boot options?

I have tried different versions of openSUSE, Fedora, and Debian. Even
latest alpha versions. They either don't detect any harddisk, or hang.

I found on my MSI K9A Platinum (AMD Crossfire chipset, which I
think is the same as the one you are using?) that SuSE 10.1 would not
load, but I had no significant problems with OpenSuSE 10.2. When you
say OpenSuSE, I assume you mean that you started with 10.2 and maybe
went on to 10.3 Alpha? I am surprised. But the problem is not the
chipset (which some people seem to be implying). The problem is
either something about the ASUS BIOS, something else about your
hardware, or maybe something specific about your loading parameters.

panic. I have done alot of googling and I see a fair amount of people
having the exact same problems with this board that I am. I have seen
zero solid answers.

I hope you reported at least some of your experiences on the
appropriate Bugzillas. If your motherboard is the one I am thinking
of, it is the one that I was intending to buy next. My experience
with the MSI board has been quite satisfactory, and I see some
potential advantages to the AMD chipset, so I was thinking about
getting the ASUS version, so I would have ECC suppport on a computer
using the same chipset.

If it makes any difference, I am still running a single core CPU.
I should be buying an X2 in a couple of weeks.

Sad thing is i've been trying to completely switch to Linux for years.
This was going to be the big move so I bought (what I thought was) nice
hardware to run. But these problems have been going on for over 7 months
now so Im guessing that the community just doesnt have much interest in
this board/chipset? Should I save my pennies for a different board and
trash this sucker?

Ironically, my MSI board is the first computer I have run pure Linux
on. There is *no* Windows system on it, nor have I even installed
WINE. Then again, I still have 3 other computers running Windows,
and a couple of Macs, so I would not call myself a "Linux convert"
completely. It did feel quite exciting though, on the first day,
knowing that I did not has a dual-boot option to fall back on if
the Linux did not turn out good enough this time around. I should
add that part of the excitement was that it was also my first SuSE
machine whereas most of my previous Linux was RedHat.
