DVD-RAM writing

I'm running Debian/Etch (2.6.18 kernel) on a server. I'm backing up nightly to a dvd-ram disk. However, I am currently doing it using dvd+rw-format and growisofs.

I should be able to write to it directly from what I've been reading. I should supposedly be able to do something like:

mke2fs /dev/dvd (with or without a -b 2048 option)
mount -t ext2 /dev/dvd /mnt/dvd

However, when I try to do the mount, it tells me that the filesystem is invalid. If I try to mke2fs a second time, I get errors on blocks 2 and 0 during the format.

What am I missing?
