Well, that would be the next thing to check as you have already
suggested you will do on your wife's computer.
I assume the camera still takes pictures and can display them ok on itself
or else we wouldn't be discussing this topic.
If you have a windows machine to try it on, do so and, if it works, make
sure it's unmounted properly before disconnecting it. I'm not sure what
the terminology is for unmounting in Windows but there will probably be
some icon in the tray for doing that, there always seems to some icon in
the tray for stuff.
I borrowed a Windows laptop from my granddaughter to see if the device
icon would pop up when the camera was plugged in. The result was
negative. I've concluded the camera is broken. It takes and displays
pictures OK, but apparently can't communicate with a computer via USB
bus. Rather than simply replace the camera, I might look into a memory
card reader.
